** LIFE AT THE EXTREMES **
An Illustrated Talk by Microbiologist Norman Pace
Co-Sponsored by the National Science Foundation

Saturday and Sunday, August 23 & 24, 2pm

Exploratorium
3601 Lyon Street
San Francisco, 94123

Join Dr. Norman Pace, a Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology, and
Molecular and Cell Biology, at the University of California, Berkeley, for
a
tour of the microbial world all around us and the physical extremes of
life
on Earth. This illustrated tour will take place Saturday and Sunday,
August
23 & 24, at 2pm in the Exploratorium's McBean Theater and is free with
admission to the Exploratorium.

This lecture is offered in conjunction with the Exploratorium's
exhibition, Hidden Kingdoms: The World of Microbes, currently on view
through September 7, 1997.

Travel with Professor Pace from boiling springs at Yellowstone National
Park and on the floor of the ocean, to the insides of giant worms that
depend on bacteria for survival. Learn how new scientific techniques based
on genetic engineering are beginning to reveal a microbial world that is
far more complex, diverse and wonderful than previously imagined.

Discuss the possibility of microbial life elsewhere in our Solar System.
Find out the diverse ways that micro-organisms make a living and how we
now know that microbes constitute the main breadth of biodiversity.
