Subject: Teaching opening

Hi Pinhole folks.

My school has an opening for a full-time math and/or chemistry teacher
during the upcoming school year. Below is some information about the school
& teaching position:

Eastside College Preparatory School is a small, private school located in
East Palo Alto. Eastside was founded in response to the high dropout rate
for East Palo Alto students attending public high schools in Silicon
Valley. Poor academic preparation, high school tracking, and negative peer
pressure have all combined to create a 65% dropout rate for students.

Eastside School reverses this trend by creating a highly supportive and
academic challenging environment for students. As a small high school
enrolling no more than sixty students, we create an extremely nurturing
atmosphere. Our objective is not only for students to complete high school,
but also for them to attend four year colleges. Specifically, Eastside
makes it a priority to
* personalize education for each individual student by limiting class size
to a maximum of fifteen students
* maintain high academic standards through rigorous curriculum
* provide personalized tutorials and academic attention so that all
students can succeed
* teach innovative, hands-on courses that are relevant and memorable for
students

Job descriptions:
* Develop curriculum and teach in each the following classes: chemistry (8
students), geometry (13 students), precalculus (2 students), and calculus
(1 student)
* Tutor students during free periods and after school
* Help develop philosophy and direction of the school
* Collaborate with all staff on issues of courses, schedule, and program
offered

Qualifications:
* Experience in working with low-income students of color
* Willingness to collaborate with staff team on comprehensive issues
regarding the school and its students
* DedicationÊand commitment, as demonstrated through past jobs
* Experience in teaching and curriculum development

Time commitment: Full-time

Start date: August 1, 1998

Starting salary: $24,000 to 30,000 plus full benefits
