Summer 1998 Alumni Institute Schedule
July 20 - July 31, 1998

July 20 - July 31, 1998 Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM

LASER - High School Teachers

This two week session will explore lasers and use inexpensive solid state
laser pointers to explore interactions of light and matter. We will build
a diode laser and photodetector and use the tools you have made to explore
the many ways lasers may be used in science and mathematics. Participants
will receive a kit containing laser and laboratory equipment needed to
perform the myriad of activities designed to fit into math and science
courses throughout high school. Activities from Project LASE developed by
Prof. Gareth Williams will be adapted for use at the Exploratorium. This
program is offered in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

Teachers will be expected to develop activities that they will present on
both Fridays. Workshops will use Exploratorium exhibits, classroom
explorations using simple Snackbook like apparatus, and also involve visits
to research lasers. The Exploratorium Library, on-line research facilities,
and a small Teacher Institute shop will be available for teacher use.

We are looking for teams (consisting of one math and one science teacher)
who will infuse these activities into the school's math and science
departments.

July 20 - July 31, 1998 Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Integrated Middle School Math and Science

Back by popular demand. Join us for more integrated math and science
experiences! Some of the math concepts we will explore include pattern
recognition, graphical representation, ratios and proportionality, and
algebraic thinking. These math concepts will come alive through science
activities and museum exhibits involving measurement, astronomy, human
biology, perception, physical science, and biological science.

July 20 - July 31, 1998 Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM

Teacher Institute Leadership Seminar - Middle and High School Teachers

Are you ready to take on a leadership role in your school or district? Do
you want to learn how to pass on the Exploratorium's approach to teaching
to your colleagues? Would you like to be more effective in helping
beginning teachers at your school? Then join us
for an exciting 2-week exploration of issues related to student learning,
pedagogy, and assessment. Like everything we do in TI, this session will
be interactive, hands-on, and transformative! (The stipend for this
workshop will be $600.)

July 20 - July 31, 1998 Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Human Body Activity Book - Middle and High School Teachers

Be a part of developing the first-ever Biology activity book from the
Exploratorium!!! In this workshop, teachers will test the write-ups of
tried-and-true human body-related activities and have the opportunity to
develop their own human body activities and snacks. What can be better than
a book for teachers, developed and tested by teachers? Middle school and
high school teachers welcome.

Web Science Workshop - Middle and High School Teachers

Get On-line! Journey to far-off lands from the comfort of the
Exploratorium. The ins and outs of the Internet will be the main focus of
this two-week workshop. You will create your own personal World Wide Web
pages and pages based on your snack activities. Each participant will also
be given access to the Exploratorium server. Basic Macintosh skills
required.
