Dear friend of the Exploratorium Teacher Institute,

On the weekend of August 15-16, Wonderfest 98 will make science come alive
in the Bay Area. The heart of Wonderfest is a series of
discussions/debates between pairs of accomplished researchers that run
SIMULTANEOUSLY at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford, and UCSF. Among the questions
to be addressed are:

Do genes largely determine human behavior?
Is the search for extraterrestrial intelligence dangerous?
Is alternative medicine worthy of further research?
How is the quest for artificial intelligence progressing?

And among the articulate, world-class scientists participating in
Wonderfest are:

Jill Tarter, inspiration for Jody Foster's character in the movie "Contact"
Dean Ornish, Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute Lotfi
Zadeh, originator of "fuzzy logic" Andrei Linde, co-creator of the
self-reproducing, inflationary universe model John Searle, author of the
"Chinese Room" argument against machine intelligence
