Subject: Hubble Space Telescope Workshop

I just came across the following. Unfortunately, there is a January 22nd
deadline; there is also the expectation that participants will attend a 2
hr meeting in May, but this can probably be waivered with a phone call (The
program has national aspirations after all) and, finally, it's not clear
what the housing arrangements are other than the fact that it's cost will
come out of your stipend. Despite all of this I thought there might be
pinholers out there who might be interested in looking into the following
(the application is at the end of the notice):

on the World Wide Web.

What is the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)?

The Space Telescope Science Institute is responsible for the scientific
operation of the Hubble Space Telescope: selecting and supporting telescope
users, scheduling telescope observations, archiving data, and planning for
new telescope instruments. The primary goal of the Office of Public Outreach
is to conduct an exemplary national program that brings the scientific
results and technology of the Hubble Space Telescope to teachers, students,
and the general public.

Applicants will be notified by: March 10, 1999

Purpose of the Summer Workshop:

* To develop interactive activities on the World Wide Web that use Hubble
Space Telescope images to enhance students' science and math concepts
and skills. Each team- consisting of two teachers and STScI staff- will
create one interactive lesson.

* To develop resources that teachers can use to create their own lessons.

Experience/Skills Required:

* At least two years of teaching experience in science and/or math.
* Knowledge of the capabilities of the World Wide Web.
* Science or math curriculum development.
* General knowledge of current systemic initiatives; teaching and
developing creative, inquiry-based science/math lessons; and the
National Science and Math Standards.
* Ability to write clearly and concisely for a general audience.

Note:

* Participants will be expected to meet at the Space Telescope Science
Institute in Baltimore, Maryland on the Johns Hopkins University
Homewood Campus. Work hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
* There will be a 2-hour training session in May 1999.
* No funds are available for transportation and lodging.
