For all of you Pinholers who never made it to the Institute and Museum of
the History of Science in Florence, or Florence for that matter, here's
your chance to see what you missed. If you've been there, here's a chance
to experience it again - well, as best as one can on the internet.

The museum has set up a marvelous website covering some of what you can see
there. You can tour the museum room by room by means of the map of the two
floors of exhibits or you can get around using the multimedia catalogue.

If you have Quicktime VR, you can take a virtual tour of room IV dedicated
to Galileo. If you don't have Quicktime VR, you can download the latest
version there just as you are about to begin the tour. For those of you
with a high speed connection (i.e. have access to the internet at school or
at the Exploratorium) this is the way to go.

One of the other on-line exhibits available at that site is called
"Mechanical Marvels - Invention in the Age of Leonardo". A lot of L. de
Vinci works are on view as well as that of some of his contemporaries.

If you are fluent in Italian then, not only can you do the above in
Italian, but you can take advantage of the huge bibliography of documents
that have been made available to the general public there.

Here's the URL of the homepage:

Choose "On-line Exhibits" to taken in the offerings mentioned above.

There are plans to expand the offerings in the future.

Enjoy - ron
