Subject: Snails and copper

Why is it that snails (and to a lesser degree slugs) will not crawl over
copper strips around gardens? I have heard -- but not substantiated -- that
the copper needs to be unoxidized copper. What is it about copper that
prevents mollusks from crawling over it? Is it an electrochemical reaction
with the copper? A chemical reaction? Something physical?
