Subject: Steelhead habitat

I'm working on an IISME fellowship for the Santa Clara
Valley Water District this summer and wondering if any
of you might have some thoughts on the subject of my
research. My research questions are "What are the
thermal limits and preferences of local steelhead?"
and "How do pools in creeks affect steelhead
survivability in low water flow situations?" I've been
working for the last two weeks at U.C.B. in the
Bioscience and Water Resource Libraries reading
journals and research papers, but I was curious if any
of you might have "out of the box" thoughts on getting
more info on helping our friends the steelheads come
back to our local creeks. I've been reading some
interesting articles (the whole IISME thing is to give
teachers a chance to "do real science") and I guess
I'm surprised at how ambiguous the data is. After
reading about 45 articles I am now absolutely sure
that steelhead prefer not to be frozen or boiled (they
chose other water tanks when offered a choice), the
rest is open to some interpretation. Next week I get
to hike the creek doing temperature and dissolved
oxygen measurements. Anyone have suggestion of useful
sources of data not found in a library?

With firm handshake,
Raleigh McLemore
