SUBJECT: Understanding Science Initiative

“. . . to promote and support all aspects of effective science teaching . . .”
        CSTA Vision Statement

 Dear Colleague:

In its ongoing commitment to supporting good science, CSTA has launched a major initiative to highlight the
importance of teaching evolution, the single most important underlying concept in science, in our schools.
Beginning this fall, a series of forums and events will bring the dramatic history, social significance, and
educational imperatives of evolution and the nature of science to life.

 UNDERSTANDING SCIENCE

September 6 Kick-off event at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco
A free forum and town hall meeting to preview the new ground-breaking PBS series, Evolution, to air in the
month. Panel discussion, review of available resources for teaching evolution, town hall meeting with a panel of
experts, and reception. FREE to teachers, school board members, and parents.

September 11 Kick-off event at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

state. As a special open house for KQED members, viewers and listeners, each of the six Berkeley Natural
History Museums share their collections and research facilities for behind-the-scenes tours and mini-lectures.
