Subject: opportunities for teachers

Hello Pinhole Friends,
I have collected some mail announcing various opportunities for teachers
that I would like to share with you:

1) IISME (Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education) Summer
Fellowships
This program places teachers in paid science/technology industry positions
for eight weeks in the summer. There are several one day workshops planned
during which you can learn more about the program. For more information,
go to: http://iisme.org or call (408) 446 7685. The application deadline
for summer 2002 is January 14, 2002.

2)Future Connections for Youth (an IISME field trip program)
Learn more about industry based field trips for at-risk or educationally
disadvantaged students, and help them answer questions like "why are we
learning this?". For more information or to apply for a field trip, go to:
http://iisme.org or call (408) 446 7672.

3) Toyota Tapestry Grants
Toyota will award up to $10,000 for exciting and innovative ways to present
science to students. Mini-grants of up to $2,500 are also available.
Proposal deadline is January 17, 2002. For more information, go to:
http://www.nsta.org/programs/tapestry or call 1 (800) 807 9852.

4) Marine Science Institute Field Trip Programs
The Marine Science Institute in Redwood City has a variety of programs to
help teach students about the life in and around the SF Bay. Some of these
programs take place on the shore, and others take place aboard their
research vessel. (Last spring a group of TI teachers went on the
"Discovery Voyage", which was a great learning experience as well as an
exciting day on the bay). These trips book quickly, so if you are
interested, contact MSI as soon as possible. For more information, go to:
http://www.sfbaymsi.org or call (650) 364 2760 ext. 10 or 11.

5) California Mathematics Council Northern Section Annual Conference at
Asilomar
Everyone's favorite math conference will be the first weekend in December,
with most sessions taking place on Saturday, December 1. Early (discount)
registration is $95 if postmarked by November 6, 2001. For more
information, go to: http://www.cmc-math.org or call (925) 680 8573.

6) Exploratorium Teacher Institute Fall Workshop Schedule
The fall workshop schedule will be mailed out later this week or early next
week. Look for it in your mailbox! Sign up early to get the workshops of
your choice. The on-line sign up will be available soon.

See you at a Saturday session soon,

Lori Lambertson
