I do believe the the name "Quicksilver" has an historical meaning due to
its use in silver mining. Mercury was used to separate silver from the
other stuff around it and it was the quickest way of doing it. It was used
in Mexico, Central America and South America along with parts of California
and Nevada (and probably elsewhere, but this is what I learned in my Latin
American Studies class).
