Subject: meteor energy

In the current issue of Mercury, the magazine for Astro Society of the
Pacific, there is a good article on near-Earth asteriods and the
possibility of them hitting Earth.

On p. 26 there is a graph that shows that the energy of an asteriod impact
is proportional to the SQUARE of its mass. Why the square? I would have
thought that the energy would be proportional to the mass, and to the
square of the velocity.

Thanks,

Bill Taylor
