Subject: math and reading wars

I found the following article interesting. Has Janathan correctly
identified the basis of this
controversy?

Cheers,
John

"One way to end the math and reading wars"

Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of education and history at New York
University, says the battles over how best to teach math and reading are
less about subject matter than about "competing conceptions of human nature
and development. One side thinks children develop naturally, while the
other believes that learning must be imposed upon their natures." The best
teachers combine both approaches, Zimmerman says, but unfortunately, too
few have the training and background required to do so.
