Geoff,
A quick search I did for uses of ethane showed that as a component of natural gas, it actually IS burned as a fuel to a large extent. The reference went on to note that if ethane is purified, it is often converted to ethene (ethylene) for use in petrochemical manufacturing (polyethylene, etc.).
