Hi Joe.

Not sure where you're at in the Bay Area, but there are some neat things in the East Bay dealing with the Hayward Fault. Runs right through the old downtown area. If you go about a half a block east (uphill) from Mission Blvd in the area between A & D streets, you can see cracks that run across the sidewalk, street, and up the side of the buildings. The cracks continue on the next block north or south. The fault also runs under Memorial Stadium at Berkeley (Go Bears!) and the Masonic Home in Union City (? borders now fuzzy in my mind). On some sections of the hillsides in Hayward and Union City, there is a gap in the housing tracts running north-south along the base of the hill, about 100-200 yards east of Mission Blvd. This offset is required by law -- can't build within 50 ft (?) of a fault trace. Doesn't decrease earthquake damage risk, but minimizes damage from fault creep. Have fun. Not too much interest in tectonics out here in the northern plains, but evidence of glaciation abounds.
