I don't know what grade level you teach, but if you teach high school, you
may be interested in checking out the pGlo transformation and GFP purification
labs at http://www.babec.org/curricula.htm The two labs have students add some
DNA to bacteria that will make them glow under UV light, and then purify the
protein that makes the glow. The scenario that the students use is that the
protein involved is a possible cancer cure from rainforest plants. This ties
in to teaching about DNA, genetics, ecology, etc., as well as the specifics of
the rainforests and some concrete benefits of biodiversity. If you teach in
the bay area, it is likely you can get support and materials for this from Gene
Connection, SCCBEP, or whichever partnership is in your county. If you are
elsewhere, BioRad sells kits for doing this.
