I ordered 8 of the lasers that Paul mentioned.

  They're quite cheaply made -- the bottom cap is screwed on against
the batteries with exceptionally flimsy threads, so the bottom tends
to pop off. Still, the base could probably be glued on to make them
good for as long as the life of the batteries.

The laser beam "spreads" out a bit more than some of the other lasers
I've seen, but I'm also no expert at lasers, so this spread may be
normal. Each laser comes with 4 or 5 screw on caps which seem to use
diffraction gratings to make different shapes. They're kind of cool,
and potentially an interesting application to look at with a physics
class.
