Dear Bay Area Friends of NCSE,

We would appreciate your circulating the following job
announcement to
anyone who you think would be interested.

The National Center for Science Education, a nonprofit
organization
that
defends the teaching of evolution in the public
schools, is seeking
applicants for a position in its Public Information
Project.

DUTIES

GENERAL

Staff members in the Public Information Project
provide advice and
support
to local activists faced with threats to evolution
education in their
communities. They also provide information on
evolution and related
issues
to the general public, and contribute as needed to
NCSE’s publications
both
in print and on-line.

SPECIFIC

Job responsibilities may include some or all of the
following:

Responding to, monitoring, and tracking requests for
information and
advice; networking with like-minded organizations and
individuals to
assist
in responding to attacks on evolution and/or promotion
of creationism.

Responding to media requests for information on
subjects that NCSE is
concerned with.

Corresponding periodically with cooperating
organizations to inform
them of
issues and keep up contact. (In cooperation with the
Outreach
Coordinator.)

Writing articles, news stories, and other pieces for
RNCSE and other
NCSE
publications, including the web site.

Writing and supervising the production of pamphlets or
flyers on an
occasional basis, when needed.

Acting as liaison to the Legal Advisory Committee.

Public speaking and travel.

Initiating other projects as needed, in consultation
with the Executive
Director and other staff.

SCHEDULE

This is a full time, permanent position. The
expectation is that staff
will work 40 hours a week. We try to maintain a humane
workload, but
staff
in professional positions can expect that there will
be some weeks
requiring work in excess of 40 hours. Every effort
will be made to
provide
compensatory time off when such periods occur.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary depends on qualifications and experience.
Benefits are as
described
in the Personnel Manual, and currently include
medical, dental, and
retirement as well as the state-mandated unemployment
insurance and
disability insurance.

REQUIREMENTS

College graduate or comparable experience. Good
telephone, writing,
and
general communication skills, high degree of computer
literacy, ability
to
work cooperatively. Tact and empathy! Any of the
following will be
considered a plus:

· Background in evolutionary biology or related
scientific
fields;
· Background in K-12 science education;
· Experience with creationism/evolution
controversy;
· Experience in grassroots activism, especially
on civil
liberties
and/or educational issues;
· Experience in managing electronic forms of
activist
communication
(e.g., listserve management)
