Hi Roy,
I grew up in Ohio, and we experienced plentiful "heat lightning" in
the late spring, summer and early fall. It typically occurred at the
end of a very hot, muggy day, often without associated rain. You are
right about the origins of the name -- "heat lightning" because of
its general concurrence with very hot days.
