Our school district is trying to do a broad, multi-year planning effort. I am on the curriculum committee. I am researching what influences from outside a school district affect a district's choices [and implimentation] of curriculum.
Some of the influences are obvious: the Ed Code, Academic Standards, Frameworks, Textbook publishers and the adoption process, Federal statute influences, and standardized testing. I am looking for some of the more subtle [or not so subtle] influences. Examples might be individuals or community groups that pressure a district to limit or expand certain areas of curriculum; grants that provide curricular or classroom materials; the background of teachers that make certain areas more, or less, comfortable for the teacher to present; conferences or workshops; etc.
If you are willing to take a minute and list out a few influences [good or not so good] that you have felt or witnessed in your years of teaching, please feel encouraged to let me know. You can share it on Pinhole, or feel free to let me know directly at pittengerb@cabrillo.k12.ca.us
Thanks,
Ben Pittenger
