Charlotte --

I have some barium hydroxide that you can borrow. My school is near
BART, so it would be relatively easy for you to come by here if you
want to take BART.

Dissolving ammonium nitrate or ammonium chloride in water is
endothermic process, although not as spectacularly endothermic as the
barium hydroxide and ammonium chloride rxn.

Be aware that the Ba rxn creates a solution of barium chloride, which
you shouldn't just throw down the drain, since Ba is moderately toxic.

Here's the description of another, safer, endothermic rxn involving
citric acid and baking soda:
http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/ht/endothermic.htm
I haven't tried this, so I'm not sure how much the temperature will
drop. You could figure out by calculating the enthalpy change for the
reaction, and then using the specific heat of water to find how much
this energy change should drop the water's temp.

Hope this helps,
Geoff
