Subject: transition metal ions electron configuration

Hi.

I have never understand why transition metals lose their s orbital
electrons before their d orbital electrons, when they become ions. It
doesn't maek sense to me, since the d orbitals are higher energy, and
fill after the s orbitals.

Can anyone help with this problem -- I haven't found a good
expanation in several textbooks or on a website.

Thanks,
Geoff
