Subject: Dumb question number 564

Changes in potential energy make sense to me when a
liquid turns into a solid. Since there is less space
between the particles there is less potential energy.
Okay. But what happens when water freezes? Is there
actually an increase in PE as the solid forms? Or is
the reduction in PE a net result of the hydrogen
bonding (reduced electrical PE) versus increased
positional PE?

Thanks.
