Hi Kelly -- usually they don't smell badly, but it depends on what 
extra "goodies" you put in....if you put whole eggs into small 
bottles, that's too much material and it will stink.  Do you have the 
tops covered?  Use Saran wrap and just punch small air holes with a 
pin.  Also, are you using a very low wattage light bulb?  No greater 
than 40 watts -- otherwise you can cook both the  added materials and 
the microbes.  Warmer temps could also contribute to the stink.
